What is the delivery time?
In order to obtain genetic fingerprint and implement your chosen color design we need to perform several complex and reasonably lengthy steps. Canvas printing is also very time consuming step. From the time we receive your sample(s) it takes 3-4 weeks for you to get your artwork (within NZ). For the overseas customers this time depends on the location and it extends up to another 7-9 days.
Is there a discount if I order more than one portrait?
Yes, by ordering a second canvas you will get 10% discount. On the third and any subsequent canvas the discount is 20%.
How do I collect the sample?
To generate your genetic fingerprint we have to extract your DNA. DNA can be extracted from a variety of different samples but the easiest way is by using a cheek swab.
Cheek swab sample collection is simple, non-invasive and painless procedure. You simply remove a cheek swab from the plastic wrapping, press it against the inside of your cheek and while rotating rub it out and in of your mouth for 15-20 seconds. After that put the swab in the protective paper envelope which is sent to us using provided courier bag.
What kind of equipment is used to generate the DNA fingerprint?
We have all the equipment used in the state of the art forensic labs. We also implement procedures which guarantee that samples are not mislabelled or mixed up in any way.
What happens with my DNA sample after the portrait is completed?
We securely store your sample for 2 months in case you have additional requirements or wishes. After that we discard your sample. An electronic copy of your DNA fingerprint is kept for another 6 months and then deleted permanently.
Can I order just an electronic version of my DNA fingerprint?
Sure, if you want to design your own canvas (or for any other purpose) we can generate just a DNA fingerprint for significantly reduced prices. Bear in mind that this service does not qualify for the discount of 20% for the third and any subsequent fingerprint. However you get 10% discount on the second and any subsequent DNA fingerprint.
Can the DNA fingerprint be used to confirm paternity of a child?
Although most DNA segments (loci) we analyse in our work are used in the USA and Europe in paternity testing procedures, our form of DNA typing is not recommended to be used for paternity or any other DNA testing.
Our procedures are optimized and designed to produce visually superior DNA fingerprints suitable for canvas printing. On the other hand paternity tests use methods designed to give maximum resolution (separation) of different DNA fragments in order to establish which DNA fragment comes from which parent.
Corresponding fragments from two different portraits seem to be the size - why?
Difference in DNA fragment sizes can be as small as 5 base units or 1-2% of the overall length. Our methods are designed to produce visually superior DNA fingerprints suitable for canvas printing rather that separate different fragments in order to asses parental contribution to the DNA fragments. Furthermore if the canvases depict members of the same family it is likely that some of the fragments are of the same size.
What is the quality of the canvas?
After generating your DNA profile and applying desired colors we send the electronic version of it to the printery where high quality ink is used to transfer the image to the canvas. We use 260gsm cotton canvas which produces a more textured image and has a matte finish. The canvas is given time to dry both before and after treatment with a UV protectant.
A solid NZ pine 35mm frame is made, custom-sized, for your printed canvas, which is stretched around the frame and secured by staples. Our printed canvases have been tested to last for over 80 years without noticeable fade in indoor conditions, away from excessive sunlight. Our canvas media and inks will also last well over 50 years before any noticeable fade.
